Above Earth and Beyond

Avro Lancaster, Bomber That Won the War, RAF in W0rld War 2, ISBN-13: 9781857803051

The Avro Lancaster is one of the most well known and revered aircraft in aviation history. The RAF's heavy bomber was developed during the early years of World War 2 when Britain's only means of taking the offensive to Germany was through the Royal Air Force's strategic night-bombing campaign.

The first Lancaster bombing raid on Germany took place in 1942 and the plane became an instant success.

Probably the most famous mission of the Lancaster was what was to become known as the Dambuster raids on the Ruhr area of Germany when the Lancasters carried the bouncing bombs designed by Barnes Wallace.

The desert area of California that is now home to the Lockheed Aircraft plant was named Lancaster after the famous plane.
